“Healthy is an outfit that looks different on everyone.” ~ Unknown

I LOVE learning!  As I have continued on this journey of nutrition, I have delved into webinars, courses, and numerous books to keep current and knowledgable in this ever-changing field.

A couple of years ago, one of my sons challenged me on fasting and the ketogenic lifestyle.  At first, I rejected it because both were contrary to what I had been taught in school.  But I decided that if it was worth asking about, it was worth figuring out where it fit my paradigm of nutrition knowledge.  What a journey of learning I embarked on!

My initial interest in eating “the ketogenic way” was peaked a year later when Dr Dale Bredesen wrote about the success of applying a low-carb high-fat eating style with intermittent fasting as a way to reverse or at least slow the onslaught of Alzheimer’s disease.  Why did this interest me?  My mom had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and I was willing to try anything to slow the progression of her precious memories.

The more I dug the more I realized this made sense — reduce carbs and eat only when hungry.  Novel idea, right.  I know, how do you know if you’re hungry.  That’s the catch — until you allow yourself to experience hunger you may never know what it feels like for you.

Anyway, shortly after all this research, I was tested for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and the test came back positive.  With this diagnosis, my time was spent figuring out how I got it, what I could do about it, and what my next steps were.  Again changing what went in my mouth brought about a reduction in the bloating, distention, and gas.  Initially, I followed a modified SIBO protocol with various herbal antibiotics.  Unfortunately, they weren’t bringing about resolution, so off to my family practitioner, I did go.  I was armed with my research and a lot of medical information.  With some mild persuasion, I got a prescription for SIBO specific antibiotics for the methane version I had.  After a couple of rounds later of the pharmaceutical antibiotics, I decided to go all-in with the elemental diet.  I used Dr Allison Siebecker’s homemade version for three weeks — I missed eating real solid food so much!

At first, I would have said not much changed.  When I started back to eating solid food, I began eating a well-formulated ketogenic protocol as per Maria Emmerich’s suggestions in her books and her website, MariaMindBodyHealth.com.  Months later I realized that my symptoms and reactions to problematic foods like dairy and nuts were much less.  The change was gradual but my body appears to have started healing itself with these changes.

With these digestive improvements under my belt and Emmerich’s offering a coaching course, I decided to be a part of their first class of keto health coaches.  What a journey!  I’ve learned so much and continue to do so.
