Weigh-In Wednesdays — Lots of Books

IMG_0192Yesterday I introduced my themed blog of “Tasty Tuesdays” and today I am unveiling “Weighing-In Wednesdays.”  Wednesdays will be my opportunity to weigh in on a topic or something that has touched my thinking in someway.  It may be weigh loss focussed or I may stray to other nutritional directions.

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I LOVE my books.  Nutrition books, cookbooks, diet books, motivational books, fiction and nonfiction books…think shelves and shelves of books, stacks and stacks on horizontal surfaces.  Yep, that’s my house.  In fact, I have even planned my bookcases and which books to include on those shelves in my office that’s not finished yet.  But I also love magazines, news feeds, social streams and online information.  Basically, I love learning and being inspired by people, stories, articles, ideas, recipes and photographs.  The problem with all this information coming at me is too much “inspiration” can bog me down and paralyze me from getting other stuff done or staying the course using what I know works.

The real question is where do you draw the line.  The latest diet book or cookbook will not help me lose weight or stay motivated.  However, I know that balanced macronutritents, healthy portions and discipline work and do help me to maintain my weigh loss goals.  I also know that the habit of planning my weekly menus and preparing my food for easy access like cutting up my celery and carrots also helps me to stay successful.

Good habits go a long way too.  Lately I have been making a pot roast on Sundays, so our family has a sit-down dinner together and then quick lunches through the first half of the week.  Later in the week, I make a crockpot or roast chicken, which feeds us for dinner and a couple of lunches.  Of course, the chicken carcass is then put into the crockpot with lots of wonderful veggies and spices to make a mineral-rich and inflammation-reducing broth.  The broth then becomes yet another meal as a hearty soup served with a filling green salad.   Healthy habits, a sprinkle of motivation and a heaping spoonful of motivation keep me grounded in what I know works for me and our family.

Those numerous cookbooks on my shelves inspire me and help with planning, but they don’t keep the weight off.  Being disciplined and obedient to filling my fridge and pantry with natural wholesome foods, planning simple doable meals and eating what I plan go a long way on my journey to a healthy body.

Will I still buy the latest books?  Probably, because I may glean a piece of information that will help me, my family or my clients.  I have started to select my reading material with a more discerning eye though.

The take-aways from this first Weighing-In Wednesday blog is be inspired not paralyzed, stay true to what works, and discipline yourself to practice health nourishing habits.
